This advanced-level QI training course is the second of two courses required for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Healthcare Improvement (CAQHI) Program. Information about the course, including course schedule, eligibility requirements, and CME/MOC credit, is provided below, as well as on the Leading Healthcare Improvement (LHI) overview page.
Learners interested in the LHI course should apply for the CAQHI Program. Applicants accepted to the CAQHI Program are automatically enrolled in the course.
Session Dates:
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Course Format: Live / In-Person
Course Availability: For enrolled course participants only
Location: John P. McGovern Campus | Conference Room TBD | 2450 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77021
Due to the interactive nature of the course and with each session building upon content and discussions from previous sessions, learners are required to attend and actively participate in ALL sessions, in order to remain in the course. Attendance is incorporated into the grade structure for the course. As such, learner attendance at each session is documented and tracked.
Attendance records, along with other course requirements (including but not limited to timely submission of assignments and completion of required course assessments), are reviewed regularly by I-QIPS leadership, and an initial email notification may be sent to a learner who has not signed in for a given session (see Required Course Assignments & Evaluations section below). Learners who continue to miss course sessions may be automatically withdrawn from the course at the description of I-QIPS leadership and without prior notice.
Attendance records are based on the Attendance Sign-In Form provided for each session. Learners are solely responsible for ensuring that they have signed in (correctly and on time) for EACH session they attend. By default, learners are automatically recorded as being absent for each session, unless they complete the Attendance Sign-In Form for the session.
Learners are expected to complete and submit (on time) all homework/pre-work assignments by their respective deadlines, as well as to arrive to each session on time and prepared to present and discuss their completed assignments. Doing so serves to benefit both the individual learner and all course participants by enhancing and facilitating robust discussions during each session.
As part of the coursework, each learner is expected to complete an LHI Project Template, as well as to develop an Abstract and Poster, featuring the work-in-progress (WIP) status of their improvement project. Learners are expected to update and refine their projects after each session, based on the content, discussions, and feedback received from the respective session. By systematically applying to their projects after each session the QI principles and tools discussed during the session, the learner is able to move their project (session-by-session) closer to its implementation in their clinical area at the College and/or an affiliated institution. As such, each learner is expected to register their improvement project in the QI Project Registry before the start of the course and subsequently document their progress throughout the term of the course by entering project updates in the QI Project Registry after each session.
By the end of the course, each learner is expected to complete all of the following items:
More information provided during the course.
The following assessments are required for the course and must be completed by each learner: Pre-Course Assessment, Post-Course Assessment, Outcomes Assessment (administered about 3 - 4 months after the conclusion of the final session). Each assessment typically takes about 5 - 10 minutes to complete. The Pre-Course Assessment will be provided to learners prior to the start of the course and must be completed prior to the first session as indicated by its designated deadline.
Throughout the course, learners also are asked at the end of each session to complete a Speaker Survey to assess the faculty who conducted the session, as well as to assess the educational content presented during the session. Comments are collected anonymously, and the survey typically takes 2 - 3 minutes to complete. The feedback provided by the learners are used to improve the sessions and overall course, and the speaker ratings are included in letters provided to the faculty for inclusion in their educational portfolios. For this reason, learner participation in these surveys are greatly appreciated.
At the discretion of the I-QIPS Leadership Team, a Certificate of Added Qualification in Healthcare Improvement is awarded (and issued at the conclusion of the CAQHI Program) to each eligible learner to confirm their satisfactory completion of all CAQHI Program requirements, which includes successfully meeting all stated completion criteria for both required courses*, as well as successfully meeting all Capstone submission requirements. A separate completion certificate per course is not available to CAQHI Program participants.
Final certificate decisions are made only after all described course requirements have been completed across all enrolled learners for both courses (e.g., I-QIPS' receipt of all required assignments and course assessments), including the final Outcomes Assessment for each course.
Refer to the LHI course - overview page for a full description of course expectations and the requirements/criteria for course completion.
*Note: Ultimately, a learner's eligibility to receive a Certificate of Added Qualification in Healthcare Improvement is impacted by their attendance records, level of participation in discussions per course session, and on-time submissions of all required assignments and assessments throughout the course, as described in the Criteria for Completion section of each course.
Eligible physician and physician assistant course participants, who satisfactorily complete the course, can earn MOC Part 4 credit/points or NCCPA Category 1 PI-CME credit, respectively, for their qualified QI posters presented at the conclusion of the course.
If approved, MOC Part 4 - Improvements in Medical Practice credit is issued to physicians by participating Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Likewise, NCCPA Category 1 Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI-CME) credit is issued to physician assistants by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

After completing the course, learners are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract to an academic conference of their choosing to present their improvement project, as well as to notify the I-QIPS (email above) of their accepted presentation.
Additionally, learners are invited to attend the conference(s) listed on the Education page. Unless otherwise noted, there typically is no fee to attend; however, registration may be required.
